Highlights from 2021!

2021 was another great year of peace advocacy at GMDCND. Below are some of the highlights.

We celebrated the ‘entry into force’ of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (‘Ban Treaty’) on the 22nd January. Stockport for Peace rang bells to spread the news. Click image for more on the Ban Treaty.

Our campaigning efforts and celebrations of the Ban Treaty success were covered in Mancunian Matters (click image for more).

GMDCND’s Rae Street published a letter in the Morning Star on the government’s disgraceful Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy.

We co-hosted an international event on ‘Stories from Chernobyl’ – looking at efforts to document and recount the 1986 disaster and deal with its legacy.

Our friends at Palestine Action shut down the Israeli-owned Elbit Ferranti arms facility in Oldham. Click image for the story.

We hosted a webinar assessing the UK’s Integrated Review, with talks from CND’s Dr Kate Hudson (Gen. Sec.), Dr Dave Webb (Chair) and Dr Jenny Clegg (GMDCND / CND Council).

We marked Conscientious Objectors’ Day (15th May) with a vigil outside Friends Meeting House in Manchester, to remember all those who have refused to bear arms and participate in war.

We were well represented at Manchester May Day March by Youth & Student CND’s Ellie, Sam and Isaac – braving the rain for a good cause!

Oldham Peace & Justice (affiliated to GMDCND) organised a demonstration outside Elbit Ferranti in Oldham, to raise awareness about Elbit’s role in the oppression of the Palestinian people.

Protests continued in Oldham…

Our fantastic festivals team got back into the swing of things at Green Man Festival 2021, raising much needed funds for GMDCND and spreading our message of peace.

Vigils, events and street stalls were held across Greater Manchester to remember the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, including support from local MP Nav Mishra (below).

Activists from GMDCND, dED_UCATION and Manchester XR travelled to London to challenge and disrupt the global arms trade at DSEI 2021.

We co-hosted the Peace History Conference 2021, which explored the history of state surveillance and infiltration of peace movements, from WWI to the present. Click below for video.

We hosted the Nurses Not Nukes bloc at the Tory Party Conference demo, in protest at the government’s twisted spending priorities. Thanks to Kat and Steve for flying the banner despite strong winds!

GMDCND’s Sam and Ellie travelled to Barcelona for IPB’s World Peace Congress, networking with young activists from around the world and catching up with Beatrice Finn from the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.

We co-hosted a webinar exploring the risks to wildlife from new nuclear power stations in the UK, with guest speakers including Juliet Davenport OBE, Jonathon Porritt and the actress Diana Quick.

CND and Peace Groups marked Remembrance Day by laying wreaths of white poppies, including at Bolton Cenotaph with the playwright Neil Duffield.

Local groups joined COP26 Climate Justice demonstrations, raising the connections between climate change and militarism.

Our partners at dED_UCATION released the first in a series of videos breaking down the myths that sustain the arms trade (featuring GMDCND Co-ord member Mel V).

NW Labour CND co-hosted a fringe meeting at North West Labour Regional Conference in Blackpool, titled ‘Biden, AUKUS & The Threat of War on China’. Speakers included Joe Glenton (Veterans for Peace) and CND’s Dr Jenny Clegg.

On 11th December, GMDCND participated in the International Day of Action against the AUKUS pact, with city centre leafletting in Manchester and online actions. Below, GMDCND’s Dr Jenny Clegg discusses the issues.

That’s all for this year.

Have a lovely Christmas break and see you in 2022!
